Na ceste bukovým lesem do húščin sem zablúdzil
Počujúc kýsi hlas, čo volal ma dál
Tváre však žádnej sem nevidzel
i pokračoval sem porastem hlbší
Tam zaraz starú strigu zočím
jak do chalupy svojej ma pozýva
vraj královsky ma pohoscí
len čo na chvílu ku nej sednem
Nuž oproboval sem koláčov makových
aj zlatavého syra do sýta
že už len vína mi do krčahu naleje
a vácej tým lesem nechodzím
Len občas z večera premítám
kýho besa mi to tá stará ohyzdná striga do pohára nalála
English:
WHAT THE DEUCE DID THAT OLD HIDEOUS HAG POUR INTO MY CUP
On a journey through the beechwood I strayed into the thickets
Hearing a voice calling me to walk further
But seeing no face
I carried on deeper into the bushes
Suddenly I behold an old witch in there
inviting me into her hut
for a kinglike feast
Just to sit at her side for a while
So I tasted the poppyseed cakes
and goldish cheese to heart's content
just some wine left to fill the jug with
and flush away the dinner
All at once, I felt like petrified
unable to move left or right
Only in the morning did I wake up
inside the pit
The witch boiling water to make her own feast from me
However, I managed to flee
and no more do I walk through that forest
Only sometimes during the evening I wonder
what the deuce did that old hideous hag pour into my cup

Nad snehem pokrytýma chalupáma
temravou nocou lítá na netopírích kríllach
Mrzký lovec, čo koscenou píščalou
v časech moru potkany zvoláva
Nositel hniloby, v pohrebném šace
Dve srdcá nosí v hrudzi
Dzedziny a usadolsci
padajú pod jeho mátožným dotykem
Zvesci hovorá, že zlítáva ze severu
Ze zámku chmár v kraji prízrakov
Kde jeho studzené oči
pozorujú horské úbočá
Za osamelých večerov spomína
na stracené storočá
Kedy jeho rod plundroval
v šírem kraji navókol
Dnes ostal jedziný
vo svojej plesnivej krypte
V predvečer svatého Juraja
ked modrasté plamene tlejú nad skrytými pokladmi
Miznú rolníci i povozy, na hranici jeho panstva
English:
UPON THE WINGS OF DARKNESS, AN ENVOY OF PLAGUE AND PUTREFACTION DESCENDS TO THE MOUNTAINSIDES
Above the snowcovered cottages
through murky night he flies upon the wings of a bat
Nefarious hunter, who calls the rats with an ossesous pipe
in times of plague
Bringer of putrefaction, in cerements of the grave
Two hearts dwell within his chest
Villages and farmhouses fall
beneath his phantasmic touch
Rumours say that he descends from the north
From the castle of sorrows, in the phantoms' land
Where his cold eyes
watch the mountainsides
During solitary evenings he recollects
the lost centuries
When his race plundered
the wide surrounding lands
Today he remains the only one
in his mouldy crypt
In the eve of St. George's day
when blueish blazes glow over hidden treasures
Peasants and carriages disappear
on the borders of his demesne

Užitečná vec jest víno, když se skrovne pije,
srdcu veselosť dodává, údy posilňuje.
Ale bez spúsobu pité víno v zbytečnosti,
nakloňuje ku nemocám, i ku bezbožnosti.
neb i starým z neho prišla ku zlému príčina.
Když skrz vúňu, aneb barvu te ponúká k chuti,
merkuj, abys' jed nevypil k zlému upadnutí.
English:
ABOUT WINE, AS THE ERUDITE HUGOLÍN GAVLOVIČ FROM HOROVCE HAS SPOKEN
Wine is a rewarding thing if drank modestly
It delivers merriment to the heart, strenghtens the limbs.
But wine drank without manners, in futility
pushes towards maladies and impiety.
It cools down when attached from the outside, warms when drank
Generally is disservicable for young people.
One glass is for health, the second for joyance,
the third helps to drunkenness, fourth to feyness.
When you are young, I recommend you, abstain from wine,
for even the old ones have come to mischief through it.
When by bouquet, or by colour it incites you to taste,
beware not to drink poison for malefic decay.

Ked denné svetlo sa kráci
a v chotári započne prituhovat
strigy létajú po tmavém nebi
Pozor treba dávat
aby kravám v maštali nepočarovali
či vodu v studni neotrávili
Práskaní bičem a trúbení
na krížne cesty ich odžene
Cesnakem treba dom i stajne potret
English:
WITCHING DAYS, WHEN ONE OUGHT NOT TO WALK OUT AFTER SUNSET, NOR TUG THE FEATHERS
When the daylight shortens
and it gets chilly inside the bounds
witches fly in the sombre sky
One needs to take care
for the cows not to get bewitched in the barn
and the water not to get poisoned in the well
Cracking of whips and blowing of horns
drives them away to the crossroads
One needs to inunct the house and barns with garlic
But only he who sits upon the spruce stool
can see witches behind the church altar
It's better to sit beside the fireplace
and drink spirits
On witching evenings, when evil forces
roam over the snowcovered carpathian land.

Na horném konci
u čiertaže hory
Žil kedys' jeden odlud
Čo ženy ni ratolescí jakživ nemal
Zvesci o nem nésli sa krajem
Že s čertáma a zlobohma
v jedném spolku je
A všelikeré strigónstva
za temravy stvára
Však ožran to bol veliký též
i surovec pluhavý
Ked špiritus rozum mu pomúcil
V maštali zver svoju budzogánem pobil
Volou krvou
kamenný kruh v bralách potrel
'By besov na poradu zvolal
Tak za jedného večera
nadobro sa prepadel
Kerési staruchy vraveli
že kosodreviny jeho kosci zdobili
Iné, že striga do jamy ho vlúdzila
a zem sa nad ním uzavrela
English:
THE OLD MAN FROM THE WOODS, WHO SLAYED HIS LIVESTOCK WITH A MACE
At the upper end
near the border of the woods
There once lived an old sourpuss
Never did he have a wife nor children
Rumours about him roamed the land
That he is in alliance with devils and evil spirits
and practices all kinds of witchcraft in the dark
But he was also a great drunkard and a nasty brute
When liquor obscured his reason,
he has beaten his livestock with a mace inside the barn
Painted a stone circle in the hills with ox blood
To call the spirits for a council
On one evening
he suddenly vanished completely
Some old women said that his bones
adorned the dwarf pines
Others said a witch lured him into the pit
and the earth locked up above him

Pivem jačmenným potrundžený
za dzedzinou snehem sa táceš
Z hór ozývajú sa dzivé škreky
a veter hací vidzení
Však zaraz místnýma si prichycený
Kerí už vedzá jak s tebou vynaložit
Do chléva si friško vhodzený
So svináma dnes večer prenocuješ
V sene a černém hnoji
Zaspíváš šeckým tým,
čo za studzených nocí
nevrácili sa naspak
Lebo pod hvezdáma pekne sa chodzí
ked sneh pod noháma vŕzga
mesác našepkáva tajomstvá
a pijatika gebulu krúci.
English:
ABOUT THE ONE WHO OBSCURED HIS MIND WITH DRINKING AND ENDED UP HAVING TO SPEND THE NIGHT INSIDE THE PIGSTY
Drunken by barley beer
You falter in the snow behind the village
Ferocious shrieks echo from the hills
and wind hinders the sight
However, eftsoon you are captured by the locals
Who know very well how to treat you
Swiftly you are tossed into the sty
to spend the night with pigs
In hay and black dung
you will sing for all those
who never came back on cold nights
Since it's pleasant to walk under the stars
when snow creaks beneath the feet
moon whispers its mysteries
and booze spins the head.

Nahor v skalách, ve vodách prebýva
Pod závojem z lekén, na dne sníva
O časech pred časem, kedy noha človečá
jeho útlou ríšou nekráčala
Chlapina zrutná, s hlavou vola
Dva mocné rohy proci hvézdam
Po zvonení večerném
zavše z jazera vystúpi
Vtedy dol v dzedzine
okenice uzamknú
I richtár flašu čertovice vglgne
Za tuhých stridžích nocí
Kedy sneh chotár stríbri
Poza zvonkohru ciaglov
Vidno gegynu rohmi zdobenú
Bučaní hrózonosné
od doliny po salaše nocou zvučí
Až na Tomáša pokoj zavládne
Jazero pod ladem zadríme
Ked nové slnce dorastat započne
English:
A LAKE OGRE, WITH HORNS OF AN OX AND BODY OF A MAN
Up in the rocks, it dwells in the waters
Under the veil of water lilies, dreaming on the bottom
About the time before time, when no human foot
crossed his small realm
An enormous man with the head of an ox
Two mighty horns against the stars
After the evening bells toll
he sometimes walks out of the lake
Then they lock up the windows
down in the village
Even the maior drinks up a bottle of spirits
During cold witching nights
When snow paints the district in silver
From behind the carillon of icicles
a horn-adorned bonce is to be seen
Horrific bellow resounds through the night
from valleys to the sheep pinfolds
Only on St. Thomas' day peace comes back
The lake falls asleep under ice
when the new sun begins to grow

V lone zeme bije skalisté srdce,
v zelenavém svice vprostred hór
Kto vyroní slzu prechádzajúc kol?
Kto prebudzí z drímot predveký čas?
V černozemi leží meč samoseč
kostnatou dlanou uchycený
Svetovládny kedys' šarkanobijca
Pod kamením sníva, pod horou
O zlatém vajci, ze zlatej kačky
O knažnej z morských vĺn
O svetskej moci, murovaných zámkoch
Sláve, čo pretrvá kamenný rov
Raz korene hór roztvorá zem
na paripe mátožnej vycvála
Najvačší na svete, Popolvár-král
do nových časov nás povedze
Lud spod hór, pod snehem meravý
Prebudzí sa pred koncem dní
English:
POPOLVÁR THE GREATEST IN THE WORLD, DRAGONSLAYER AND HERO
A stony heart is beating in the lap of the earth
in the virescent gleam within the woods
Who will shed a tear walking by?
Who will awaken the ancient times from sleep?
The sword Samoseč lies within the black soil
clenched by a bony fist
Once a world-dominating dragonslayer
He dreams under the rocks, under the mountain
He dreams of a golden egg, from a golden duck
About a princess from the sea waves
About temporal power, walled castles
About glory, that endures the stony tomb
Once there will come a time, when the roots of mountains
will tear the earth wide open
The greatest in the world, Popolvár-king
will gallop out upon a phantom steed
Leading us into new times
The folk from below the mountains, stiff under snow
Shall awaken before the end of days

STRIDŽIE DNI ("THE WITCHING DAYS") is a celebration of the countryside in Western Slovakia, with all its grotesque myths and lore. All lyrics are written in local dialect and they mostly deal with folklore legends based on rural witchcraft, drunkenness and also national pride.
Like the Slovak soul itself, these songs are often both grim and humorous, merry and melancholic at the same time.
Recorded during 2014-2015. Sound, mix & mastering by HV and Přemysl Ondra.
All music & lyrics by As, except "O víne, kterak učený Hugolín Gavlovič z Horovec vyprával" lyrics written by Hugolín Gavlovič in 1755. This album is dedicated to the memory of Svetozár Stračina (1940-1996).
